Authentic Hoodia

To get authentic hoodia today is quite a problem as the plant comes under the endangered species. With the growing demand for hoodia gordonii thanks in no small measure to the hype that has been created by the media, obviously there are a number of unscrupulous manufacturers who sell fake goodie under the guise of the real thing. The problem is, in the USA it is classified as a natural supplement and so is outside the purview of the FDA. Had it been a prescription drug, there would have been strict measures to ensure that every tablet of hoodia gordonii that was sold was the genuine hoodia and anything that violated this would have come under heavy litigation. Unfortunately, that is not the case with natural supplements.

To get authentic hoodia gordonii, manufacturers have to source it from the African governments where the plant is grown and the product has to have a CITES certification because the plant is an endangered species. Thanks to this, in the US too, the import and export of this product is regulated. However, manufacturers get over this by importing a small quantity, marketing the tablets or capsules as genuine hoodia gordonii and adding a whole lot of other herbs to the product. So the amount of pure hoodia is so miniscule that it might have no effect as a hunger suppressant at all. That means consumers are paying for no real weight loss effect at all.

If you want to buy the real thing, you need to look for certification from CITES as well as find out from other users – people you know or in forums online – whether or not a particular brand works. Only after you gather a bit of advice in this direction should you go out and spend money on hoodia gordonii diet pills. Otherwise you will really be throwing your money to the winds for all the benefit that you will get from these fake pills,

Research on these tablets have shown that at least half of what are available are not authentic hoodia gordonii. So it pays to be a bit astute and shrewd when it comes to buying any hoodia for your use. Do take the trouble to research and find out which brands are better and which brands have a consistent record of working well with people. If you are on a weight loss trip, you need to take the right products to achieve the amount of weight loss you have targeted and taking fake pills and hoping for the best is not the way to go!

Buying Pure Hoodia

There are some things that you must know before you decide to buy pure hoodia gordonii.

Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant that grows in the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa and Namibia. For centuries, the San tribes or Bushmen of the Kalahari have used it to suppress hunger and thirst when there was no food available and they had to go on long hunting expeditions. There are many species of hoodia, but only hoodia gordonii works as an appetite suppressant.

In the 1960s, the South African CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) began studying Hoodia Gordonii. Working with a British company called Phytopharm, they isolated an active ingredient in hoodia gordonii – a molecule they named P57, which caused suppression of hunger and thirst. CSIR patented P57 and leased it to Phytopharm, who are presently running clinical trials on hoodia gordonii. Phytopharm is now in partnership with Unilever to create a commercial product in the worldwide fight against obesity.

Since hoodia gordonii was introduced to the public, it has become a huge topic of interest, excitement and hope in our obese and obsessed-with-weight-loss society. Naturally, this has spawned a very hungry market place and all kinds of “hoodia” supplements, herbs, pills, shakes and even lollipops are being sold to unwary customers.

Now, the active molecule P57 has been patented, but the hoodia gordonii plant itself cannot be patented and manufacturers are making and selling all kinds of supplements with some form of “hoodia” in them. No manufacturer can claim to have a “hoodia gordonii extract” in his product unless they want to face a court case, because the extract, P57, has been patented and leased to Phytopharm and its partner, Unilever.  But they can and do use the term “extract” in misleading terms and put it on their products.

“Consumer comparison sites” are thin disguises for unscrupulous manufacturers. The public is asked to compare all kinds of hoodia products, with the hidden manufacturer’s product being the best, of course. Calling their product 100% hoodia gordonii is also misleading. It is the inner flesh of the plant that contains the appetite suppressant extract, and powdering the entire plant – stalks and spiny skin included – reduces the amount of the active ingredient to less than 40%. Many manufacturers give reams of information and chemical analysis, without mentioning the name of the laboratory used.

To be certain that you are buying pure hoodia gordonii, look out for the following signs:

Hoodia Gordonii is imported from South Africa and it is an endangered species. The label must have a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) certification to show it has been legally imported and is authentic. The label must clearly give the name of the certified laboratory that has tested and analyzed the hoodia gordonii in the product.

The Hoodia Extract Controversy

The question that springs to every user’s mind will be whether it is possible to get pure hoodia gordonii as an extract. There is only one answer to that question which is no, it is not possible.  The reason for this is because most companies sell products that is only 60% pure hoodia. They may claim that it is pure hoodia but that is another matter.  What does the remaining 40% contain? Generally it is made up of leaves and flowers of the plant. There could even be caffeine in them. Of the 13 varieties of hoodia, only hoodia gordonii has the ability to suppress appetite. So you have to ensure that your product has only the right kind of hoodia.

Only the core of the hoodia gordonii yields the active P57 ingredient. There is no use consuming the leaves and bark. Even if the preparation contains hoodia gordonii, it is difficult to ensure is from the core of the plant.   Companies are known to go to every thing possible to cut corners. Reading the label before you buy the product is the best thing you can do. The capsule that you choose should contain only hoodia gordonii and gelatin which is used to make the capsule. Gelatin is essential to make the capsule cover so that it dissolves inside you. All capsules contain gelatin. Gelatin does not in any way alter the efficiency of hoodia gordonii. If you spot anything else or you find some information that uses the word ‘extract’ return it to the shelves. The product that you have just looked at does not contain 100% hoodia gordonii. It probably has 60% hoodia and 40% of some other thing.

The controversy does not end there. It only gets worse. Alkemist Pharmaceuticals has conducted research of many hoodia preparations in the market and it is shocking to say that 80% of them failed the testing norms. In fact most of them contained no hoodia gordonii. It is not easy to source so they substitute it with other types of hoodia.  Does all this mean there is no pure hoodia available in the market? Things are not so bleak. There are preparations that have the necessary certification from CITES and have been tested clinically before they appear on the shelves. All you need to do is to look around the shops and find the one that is best for you.

UniqueHoodia fulfills all the requirements that you may be looking for. It is genuine and it has been certified. When you buy hoodia gordonii from UniqueHoodia, you know that you are getting the best in the market that is 100% hoodia and not its extract, it can help you to knock off calorie intake by 1200 calories and it is 10,000 times stronger than glucose in suppressing hunger.

More about Hoodia

Hoodia appeared in the American market as a natural appetite suppressant helping overweight people in their fight against obesity. Though in appearance hoodia resembles a cactus, it is actually a succulent. It grows naturally in the semi desert area of South Africa where the indigenous San Bushmen have been chewing on it to ward off hunger during their long trips gathering and hunting. San Bushmen have lived in the Kalahari desert for close to 270 centuries.

Speaking on ABC News, Andries Steenkamp, a spokesperson for the San people, said that the San people use pure hoodia as a medicine and to suppress hunger and thirst during lean periods. Hoodia cannot be described as a drug nor is it a stimulant. Smelling an opportunity, pharmaceutical companies are exploring the possibility of synthesizing the essential ingredient called P57. If they succeed, they can patent it

How does hoodia work? Of all the various varieties of hoodia, only the type called gordonii has the appetite suppressing element which works on the brain like natural glucose by producing a perception of fullness. If this indeed happens, intake of calories can fall by nearly 1000 calories a day.
In an interview to BBC, Phytopharm’s Dr. Richard Dixey elaborated on how P57 worked. Within the human brain, the thalamus is the center which controls hunger. With intake of food the blood sugar goes up activating cells within the thalamus which transmit signals indicating fullness. With hoodia this happens with no food being eaten because it contains a more powerful element that fools the brain.

How fast will hoodia work? Some people claim that they have felt effect with minutes. But realistically speaking it takes two weeks of regular consumption to produce effect.  This could range from reduced desire for food, longer gaps between pangs of hunger, faster fullness and a sense of well-being.

Does hoodia have secondary effects? Hoodia gordonii does not seem to have any side effects. Of course individual reactions to substances vary. It is best to consult one’s doctor for advice before going on a course of hoodia.

It will be years before P57 is synthesized and drugs available in the market. Meanwhile, natural pure hoodia is available in many forms. That said, exercise caution before consuming any of it, because many of them have been found to contain no hoodia or worse are contaminated. That is why it pays to be wary when it comes to taking any hoodia supplement that is available. It would be advisable to take it under a doctor’s supervision in case of any untoward effects or reactions with medication you might already be taking. It would also help to do a bit of research and buy the brand that actually contains pure, natural hoodia with no additives.

Genuine Hoodia Gordonii

There are so many varieties of hoodia and it is only the hoodia gordonii plant that has tested well for suppressing the appetite satisfactorily. So it is necessary to do a bit of spadework before you blindly go out and pick up some hoodia diet pills or hoodia capsules or hoodia powder. Just a bit of hoodia research and reading up on hoodia reviews will give you an insight on the hoodia that you should buy.

The problem with hoodia is that it is not FDA approved because it features as a supplement and not as a prescription drug. So it is up to you to be savvy and make sure that what you are buying is hopefully the real thing. For one thing, you have to ensure that it is hoodia gordonii and not any of the other varieties of hoodia because that might not be of any use to you at all. The real hoodia is certified and approved before it leaves South Africa but there are instances where there have been fake hoodia certificated that have surfaced so it is really hard to tell, Besides looking at and checking the label carefully, you need to also ask around and look at what is written in about hoodia online, Don’t get taken in by manufacturer’s claims – a hoodia forum will probably yield a lot more results when you are on the lookout for genuine hoodia gordonii.

If you were to go by the claims of the many hoodia manufacturers, all they talk about is how their hoodia is the right one and is infinitely better than everyone else’s. Unfortunately not one of them will have certified clinical trials to prove that theirs is a superior product. When Phytopharm does enter the market with its hoodia which it has been researching for the past few years, one hopes that there will be a leveling of the market with more testing and more hoodia trials to prove how effective and genuine it is. If it is a prescription drug, it will of course have to go through the FDA approval process while all the others will be listed as supplements. This might mean that the launch in the USA might be delayed or that they will have to come in as a supplement too, One has to wait and see what direction it will take, but what it will do to the market is make people aware that the others have to match up to the real and genuine hoodia gordionii concentrate that Phytopharm has access to and has patented.

When the amount of hoodia gordonii in hoodia tea or hoodia capsules is a very small quantity, there is not much chance of it working the way it should, Some brands have a mix of hoodia with other herbs, some do not contain any hoodia gordonii at all! You could as a consumer have it chemically analyzed at special laboratories but the tests are very expensive so most people do not go into the trouble and expense of doing so, What hoodia supplements need is the presence of the ingredient P57 which is the extract of the genuine hoodia gordonii plant.

Pure Hoodia

There are so many different brands of hoodia diet pills that are available. However, one way to make sure that you are getting the best of the lot is to look for the 100% pure hoodia certification on the label. At least this way, you’ll know that you are taking hoodia and nothing else but hoodia. So maybe hoodia will not work on you – that’s a chance that you take. However, the hoodia weight appetite suppressing quality might not work at all if the hoodia you buy is mixed with other herbs. What could be even worse is if those herbs are not just fillers but actually interfere with your body functions.

The best hoodia diet pills have the CITES certificate and they are pure, unadulterated hoodia gordonii. This certification is essential if the hoodia has to be exported out of Africa and the documents are issued only if there are chemical analysis reports stating that it is indeed pure hoodia gordonii that is present. This just makes it that much easier when it comes to choosing a hoodia brand.

Then of course, there is the debate whether it is the hoodia concentrates one should buy or the hoodia powder. Here again, there has been hardly any hoodia research done to say which is in fact more effective so most people do a trial and error way to get to what they see as the best for them. The thing is, most people tend to see hoodia gordonii as something that miraculously takes away all that extra fat when in fact all it does is to suppress the appetite. However, though some say that it does suppress cravings as well, for people who eat due to psychological disorders, just the fact that they do not have hunger pangs might not stop them from eating. Hoodia has to be looked at as one of the means to the end – the end being weight loss. It should not be viewed as the sole magical answer to losing weight.

If a person is taking other medication or supplements, it might be a good thing to talk to your doctor about taking hoodia so in case of any side effects or complications, your doctor is in the know and can make an informed decision about how to deal with it. He would also probably draw up a weight loss control program that has other aids besides just hoodia diet pills in the mix. With hardly any studies to support it, hoodia might be dangerous on a long term basis and it would be advisable to be under a doctor’s supervision all the time that you are taking it and this is especially so if you have any other ailments.

Getting Pure Hoodia

How do you know if what you bought is natural hoodia or not? There have been scams where stuff that was not hoodia was passed off as the real thing to a whole lot of unsuspecting people. In fact, there are reports that over three quarters of the hoodia available are either fake or are not pure hoodia. The problem is, there is no way of being able to tell unless it undergoes laboratory testing.

There are so many sites on the Internet that promote their own brand of hoodia and they usually go with the premise that theirs is good while most of the others are not. However, they cannot tell you how to tell that theirs is superior or the real thing. No hoodia brand has undergone extensive testing to certify that it is in fact the actual ingredient, in the right proportions and that each dose is what it should be. When there have been no safety tests done for an ingredient, how can safety measures be set up? So don’t believe all those absolutely pure hoodia ads – it would be better to go talk to people on forums to see which brand they used that worked for them.

The sad part is, there is no central testing body where a brand can be certified as containing pure hoodia and no adulterants or even worse, no hoodia at all. When people go berserk over a new diet fad, reason usually does not apply. They will still want to try it for themselves. If hoodia really does work, it would be sad if people had the fake stuff and gave up on it saying it does not work. The manufacturers meanwhile will no doubt be laughing all the way to the bank!

Hoodia gordonii from Africa must be imported only with a permit in order that there is no rash cutting down of all the hoodia plants there is the land. However, there are instances of faked certificates which make it a problem. Hoodia plants mature only after five years so care should be taken that there is no wanton destruction of the plants as demand for the product swells from all over the world.

Yet another way that hoodia manufacturers cheat people is by submitting a genuine sample to a testing lab and then packing the capsules with fake or adulterated powder.  Sad to say, when hoodia does not work on some while the results are seen on others, people might feel that they should take it for a longer spell or they might feel that the product does not work on them.
