The Unique Hoodia Gordonii

Hoodia is a cactus like plant seen in the desert areas of Southern Africa. Though it resembles a cactus with spines and a thick stem, this plant is really a succulent. Since the world heard about it in 2004, there has been a lot of interest centered on the plant. The reason for this is reported ability of this plant to suppress appetite. The San tribal people who inhabit the Kalahari and neighboring areas relate that they have used it for hundreds of years to ward off hunger and thirst while on their days-long hunting trips.

And now, this plant is available every where as a supplement. Health food shops stock it. It is freely available on the internet. You can have it as a powder, a liquid, capsules or tablets. Keen to know first hand the effects of this wonder plant, a reporter went to South Africa where in the desert, hoodia grows. She is said to have had it just like the Bushmen did and felt the same effects. For the whole day she felt no hunger or thirst. In taste, it is said to have been like a cucumber.

Some time later, it was tested by a group of obese people whereas the control group took placebos. They were allowed no exercise than watching TV. The ones on pure hoodia ate 1000 calories less. They felt no preoccupations with food, no cravings. Their appetite had just gone.

How does pure hoodia work to suppress appetite? For that we have to understand how normally metabolism works. When we eat, the food we consume is turned into glucose. When the glucose level spikes, it signals the brain that the body is full and there in no more need of food. In the case of hoodia, there is a substance called P57 that does the same. Only here there is no food. This P57 is said to be 10,000 times more powerful than glucose in producing the feeling of fullness.

Individuals often eat even when they are full. They crave food for reasons that have nothing to do with hunger. When on hoodia gordonii, some of this preoccupation with food is said to have disappeared. If the emotional reason for eating can be removed, hoodia can help people eat smarter meals by making better choices. We make wrong choices when we crave for food. With the craving gone, dependence on hoodia will reduce and maintaining a healthy weight will be easy.

Finding Genuine Hoodia Gordonii

Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant from Southern Africa that has captivated our interest. It is a natural appetite suppressant and so holds the undivided attention of us all – whether we are obese, need to just lose the last few pounds or are anywhere on the scale in between. Unfortunately, a product so much in demand always attracts the attention of quick-buck artists and hoodia gordonii has been no exception. Hundreds of websites have sprung up, all selling “Hoodia” in some form or another and claiming all kinds of facts to prove their product superior to the rest.

However, over 80% of these products have been proved by laboratory analysis to be fraud in various ways. Either the “Hoodia” in the product is the wrong type of Hoodia, or it is not the effective part of the plant or else, it is mixed in with so many other ingredients that the hoodia gordonii in it is miniscule.

So, how is one supposed to tell the difference between the real and the fake hoodia gordonii? After all, when a reputable laboratory like Alkemist Pharmaceuticals was voluntarily given a large number of products to analyze, they declared that only 20% were real hoodia gordonii. There are ways to be certain of what you are buying, and it requires that you must have done the homework on this plant that that you are thinking of trying out. A little information will go a long way to keep your body and your wallet healthy.

This is what you need to know :

1. There are many varieties of Hoodia growing all over Africa, but only hoodia gordonii contains the molecule, P57. P57, the active ingredient that suppresses appetite in found only in hoodia gordonii. The product you buy must clearly state that it is 100% real hoodia gordonii.

2. It is the inner flesh, the heart of the hoodia gordonii plant that contains P57. Some manufacturers use the entire plant: leaves, stems, flowers and roots when preparing their product. Naturally, now when the plant is tested, it will certainly state positively that it is hoodia gordonii – but, how effective will it be ? Over 60% of what you are ingesting is the perfectly useless outer parts of the plant, which makes it very cost effective for the manufacturer, but not a very effective appetite suppressant for you. Check that the hoodia gordonii that you are buying is the core of the plant.

3. There should be no other ingredients. The only other ingredient should be the gelatin of the capsule. Only pure hoodia gordonii is going to suppress your appetite – any other added ingredients are only fillers, allowing the manufacturer to line his pockets by selling you a wee bit of hoodia gordonii, but charging you the full amount.

One company that has cleared all the tests above is UniqueHoodia. UniqueHoodia sell 100% real hoodia gordonii, thoroughly tested by reputable laboratories and they also carry all the correct certificates for import on their labels. Check out their website….it will show you how to recognize the Real Thing.

Even if you did want to test it yourself, each test is so expensive.

There are some manufacturers who do certify that their products have been tested and that the tablets contain pure hoodia gordonii. It might be a god idea to check out with a few people ad read reviews online so that you have a few brand names that could be genuine. Many however are fake and you must not believe the advertisements that come from them.

You might want to see whether the hoodia you buy by CITES or the Convention in International Trade of Endangered Species Certification which is the body that certifies pure and genuine hoodia. If it is the real thing and it does work, it really will be great news for those who want to shed those pounds. Imagine hoodia being a part of a gentle exercise regimen where weight can be lost because you do not feel hungry. Most weight watchers however, want something that will work like a miracle -something that works super fast without any kind of help to carry it along. Hoodia Gordonii and The Future

Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant that grows in the Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa. It is found growing wild in Namibia, Angola, Botswana and parts of South Africa. Many species of hoodia plants are found growing throughout Africa – however, only hoodia gordonii causes suppression of appetite and it grows only in Southern Africa. Hoodia gordonii appears in the desert after summer or winter rainfall; it grows upright in clumps and can attain over 6 feet in height, needing over 50 degrees of heat to survive. It takes many years to mature, and it is very difficult to cultivate.

Hoodia gordonii has been used by the native tribes of the Kalahari Desert, the San tribes, as an appetite suppressant for centuries, when food was scarce or before embarking on long hunting expeditions. Other tribes in Southern Africa also have records of using hoodia gordonii as a food supplement, as medicine and in various tribal rituals.

Working with the South African government, a British company called Phytopharm has been studying hoodia gordonii since the 1960s, and in the 1990s, they isolated an active ingredient, a molecule they named P57, which was patented by the South African government. The government sold the license for P57 to Phytopharm. The hypothalamus is a tiny region of the brain that monitors hunger, thirst and blood sugar levels. P57, being thousands of times more active than the glucose molecule, fools the hypothalamus into sending messages that the stomach is full when no other food has been taken.

Phytopharm took on the giant pharmaceutical company Pfizer as a partner and they spent millions in trying to manufacture and synthesize enough P57, to use in diet pills. This was not successful, and Pfizer withdrew from the partnership. Phytopharm has now taken on Unilever as a partner. Unilever already produces Slim Fast and has a turnover of over a billion dollars annually, a figure they hope to add to significantly once they are able to integrate P57 into their slimming products. Phytopharm has also planted hoodia gordonii in hundreds of acres in Southern Africa, trying to cultivate it on a massive scale. If they are successful, they plan to use the plant itself in slimming products.

The exciting promise of weight loss that hoodia gordonii holds has attracted all kinds of companies to it, and they are already marketing and selling all kinds of Hoodia products, using Phytopharm’s research to attract customers. Of course, as hoodia gordonii is protected by conservation law and licensed legally only to Phytopharm, it would be prudent to thoroughly check out the ingredients and where they come from, before trying out any slimming products containing “hoodia”. Do remember that there are many species of hoodia growing all over Africa, but it is only hoodia gordonii that suppresses appetite.

Once Phytopharm’s clinical trials are complete and they are ready to launch safe and certified hoodia gordonii slimming products into this hungry-but desperate-to-lose-weight market, it is estimated that hoodia gordonii will probably be the best selling product in the world.

Hoodia Gordonii on 60 Minutes

When news of hoodia gordonii, the new “miracle” cure for the disease of obesity started making the rounds, CBS, an American TV Channel sent their reporter Lesley Stahl to South Africa to film a documentary on hoodia gordonii for their show “60 Minutes”.

Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant that grows wild in the deserts of Southern Africa. The San tribes – the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert – have eaten it for centuries to suppress hunger and thirst when food stocks were low. The Bushmen ate it before embarking on long hunting expeditions. The South African government started studying hoodia gordonii in the 1960s. With the help of the British company, Phytopharm, they took 30 years to isolate the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, which they patented and then licensed to Phytopharm.

Phytopharm took on Pfizer as a partner and spent millions of dollars on researching the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii, but it proved too difficult and expensive to synthesize a large enough quantity to market. Without being able to market hoodia gordonii as a “diet pill”, Pfizer dropped out of the partnership. Phytopharm has grown hoodia gordonii on 100s of acres of plantation in Southern Africa. Once their clinical trials are complete, they plan to sell hoodia gordonii in its natural form in diet shakes, bars and as meal replacement products on the market.

What CBS did not mention, but the Phytopharm website does, is that wild hoodia gordonii is an endangered species and protected by conservation law. No wild hoodia gordonii can be exported without a certificate from CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). So many of the “hoodia” products on the market today, become a little suspect. Wild hoodia gordonii cannot be harvested legally and Phytopharm are not selling or marketing any hoodia gordonii until their clinical trials are complete. Also, there are many varieties of hoodia plants, but it is only the hoodia gordonii plant that has the active ingredient that suppresses hunger.

It is possible that some of the products being marketed as “hoodia” are not hoodia gordonii in fact, and so, are naturally not going to be effective as appetite suppressants. It is possible that products claiming to be wild hoodia gordonii are being exported illegally. This also means that the San tribespeople are not benefiting from the royalties that are their right from the sale of hoodia gordonii.

Authentic hoodia gordonii products should carry a certificate from CITES, as well as a proper analysis from a certified laboratory. On the other hand, you can wait for Phytopharm to begin marketing their products. They promise that it will be safe, properly certified and will taste good as well.

The Hoodia Extract Controversy

The question that springs to every user’s mind will be whether it is possible to get pure hoodia gordonii as an extract. There is only one answer to that question which is no, it is not possible.  The reason for this is because most companies sell products that is only 60% pure hoodia. They may claim that it is pure hoodia but that is another matter.  What does the remaining 40% contain? Generally it is made up of leaves and flowers of the plant. There could even be caffeine in them. Of the 13 varieties of hoodia, only hoodia gordonii has the ability to suppress appetite. So you have to ensure that your product has only the right kind of hoodia.

Only the core of the hoodia gordonii yields the active P57 ingredient. There is no use consuming the leaves and bark. Even if the preparation contains hoodia gordonii, it is difficult to ensure is from the core of the plant.   Companies are known to go to every thing possible to cut corners. Reading the label before you buy the product is the best thing you can do. The capsule that you choose should contain only hoodia gordonii and gelatin which is used to make the capsule. Gelatin is essential to make the capsule cover so that it dissolves inside you. All capsules contain gelatin. Gelatin does not in any way alter the efficiency of hoodia gordonii. If you spot anything else or you find some information that uses the word ‘extract’ return it to the shelves. The product that you have just looked at does not contain 100% hoodia gordonii. It probably has 60% hoodia and 40% of some other thing.

The controversy does not end there. It only gets worse. Alkemist Pharmaceuticals has conducted research of many hoodia preparations in the market and it is shocking to say that 80% of them failed the testing norms. In fact most of them contained no hoodia gordonii. It is not easy to source so they substitute it with other types of hoodia.  Does all this mean there is no pure hoodia available in the market? Things are not so bleak. There are preparations that have the necessary certification from CITES and have been tested clinically before they appear on the shelves. All you need to do is to look around the shops and find the one that is best for you.

UniqueHoodia fulfills all the requirements that you may be looking for. It is genuine and it has been certified. When you buy hoodia gordonii from UniqueHoodia, you know that you are getting the best in the market that is 100% hoodia and not its extract, it can help you to knock off calorie intake by 1200 calories and it is 10,000 times stronger than glucose in suppressing hunger.

A Closer Look At Hoodia Gordonii

Let’s take a look at hoodia gordonii, the succulent plant which has the world in a tizzy promising to open the doors to a slimmer world. The plant grows in South Africa as well as in Botswana, Namibia and a few surrounding states. It is spiny and leafless and it has a strong smelling flower which reminds you of rotting meat – the pollination of the plants is done by flies. The San bushmen in these areas called it ‘hoba’ and they used the plant when they went on their hunting trips into the desert to suppress their hunger and thirst. The plant is medicinal and is also used to treat infections and indigestion.

It was the CSIR or the Council of scientific Research in South Africa where the ingredient P57 was first extracted from this plant and it was patented. The rights were then sold to the British pharmaceutical company, Phytopharm. Part of the profits will go to the San bushmen who helped in identifying the plant and taught the world about its extraordinary properties. They entered into collaboration with Pfizer to market it but Pfizer backed out and the contract went to Unilever. So did Pfizer think that it would not work on obesity cases? Or was the fact that there were indications to state that the extract affected the liver the reason? One does not know but now, one wonders whether or not the product from Phytopharm will make its appearance as a prescription drug or a supplement which will be more suited to Unilever’s marketing strengths.

Thus far, people are only going by the fact that this is a natural product that has been used for centuries so they feel that it cannot be harmful. No proper studies have been done, the only research that has been done and the findings made public has been done on rats not human beings. This still does not deter manufacturers or customers from marketing and buying hoodia gordonii products. The only thing to take note of is to go to a supplier who is known and who has all the certifications that the product contains real hoodia gordonii – in its pure, potent form, unmixed with anything else.

Though there have been a few small group studies that have been done – most of them successful, they have not been reviewed in peer group journals. Maybe the fact that it is being sold still as a supplement does not bring it into the strict rules that govern pharmaceutical products.

All About Hoodia Gordonii

There are all kinds of facts and information available about hoodia gordonii on the internet. Some of the claims are factual and other claims quite controversial. Let us sort out these facts and claims and find references where possible.

Let’s take a look at some of the facts. There are many species of the hoodia plant (a succulent, not a cactus) that grow wild in Southern Africa, but only one species hoodia gordonii, is believed to naturally suppress hunger and thirst. For centuries, the Bushmen or San people of Southern Africa have used the flesh of the hoodia gordonii plant to suppress hunger and thirst before embarking on long hunting expeditions. During the 60s, scientists at the South African CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research), began to study hoodia gordonii. Working together with a British company, Phytopharm, they isolated an active ingredient in hoodia gordonii – now known as P57 – which they believe is responsible for suppressing appetite and patented it. P57 was injected into the brains of laboratory rats and it was noted that it had a direct effect on the hypothalamus, which controls hunger, thirst and blood sugar levels in the body. The laboratory animals did lose weight. The hoodia gordonii plant only grows in Southern Africa (attempts to grow this wild plant in the deserts of America and Mexico were not successful), it is now a protected species and it takes 5 to 7 years for the plants to mature enough for the P57 to be extracted from them.

Now for the claims. The flesh of the hoodia gordonii plant certainly does suppress appetite as proven by the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. But as the plant itself cannot survive export, it is the extract P57 that is used by various companies marketing hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant and the clinical trials (using people, not rats) are still in progress. The dosage required to produce the result needed has not yet been quantified, so how the manufacturers of various hoodia gordonii products have come to their conclusions is not known. As yet, there is no research available recommending dosage guideline. It is only because it is being sold as a supplement and not as a prescription drug that it has gotten away without having to furnish any kind of clinical study as back-up and with huge claims, the manufacturers are raking in the money.

All clinical research done on hoodia gordonii comes from Phytopharm and its partner companies, Pfizer and now Unilever. Phytopharm has an FAQ page on their website and anyone interested in the history of hoodia gordonii will find a lot of information there. You can also find a lot of information on other hoodia websites.

Hoodia Gordonii And Complications

If one were to believe all the companies that source and package hoodia for use as a weight loss supplement, there are no complications or side effects of using hoodia at all. However, this does not take into account the use of hoodia along with any other medication or supplements. There is still not enough research on the product to state with authority that is absolutely safe for use by itself or together with other substances. Just because the African bushmen who have had it for centuries have had no complications is no yardstick say that it is absolutely safe because the circumstances and food habits that we have in other parts of the world are so different. Add to that the fact that they had it only to keep away hunger pangs because they couldn’t get food and the fact that now we have too much of food and we want to use something that keeps temptation away and you’ll see how different the two worlds are.

The company that is doing clinical research on the extract of the plant – the British pharmaceutical Phytopharm has found no evidence of complications and it has just completed the first phase of the research. There are four more phases to go and what the initial research has thrown up is that it is safe for healthy individuals. One has to of course wait to see what qualifies as a healthy individual. They do recommend that pregnant and nursing mothers stay away from hoodia gordonii. However, one still does not know if long term use could have complications show up. Even the San bushmen used it only on a need-to basis, not as an everyday addition to their diet.

There are studies yet to be done about the possible side effects in case it is used with any prescription drugs, any OTC medication or even any vitamins, supplements and natural herbal tablets. One cannot but help remembering the Ephedra problem when used with other stimulants. It is always good to make sure of all the possible reactions before it becomes a part of recommended weight loss diets. Unfortunately, many of the hoodia supplements being sold today contain other herbal powders or extracts as well and one cannot really tell whether this is a safe thing to do or whether it can be dangerous. Caution must be followed when it is something as unknown as this, besides being used for a totally different need in a totally different environment. Sadly, when it comes to weight loss, any new entrant brings with it such hope that one tends to push the practicalities aside and only focus on the hope for loss of weight.

Hoodia Gordonii Plus

Every hoodia diet pill brand takes great pleasure in advertising their brand as the best and superior to everyone else. So there is a great effort to call the hoodia they sell as hoodia gordonii plus or hoodia XT. What does this really signify? Does it mean that the hoodia is more concentrated? Or that it is more potent and works better than the others? Does it mean that it works faster? Unfortunately, none of these claims have been substantiated as yet with no hoodia research of any worth been done and published. Hoodia is classified as a supplement and therefore falls outside the purview of the FDA which means that it is not judged by its stringent rules and does not have to qualify and quantify its claims.

The plus term could also stand for hoodia mixed with other herbs as in hoodia plus something else which is also good for weight loss. One such herb is garcinia cambogia which is finding a great market as a slimming aid. Add an appetite suppressant to a weight loss herb and most people think that they have come up with a winner. How does this translate for the consumer? All these claims could just be tall claims. What is a bit worrying is that when a person buys what he thinks are hoodia diet pills, little realizing that there are other ingredients too, he could be in danger where his health is concerned. He could have asked for his doctor’s advice about whether it would be safe to have hoodia with whatever medications or supplements he is taking and once he got the green signal, he would go off and do just that. He would not realize if there are complications that it could have been the other herbs that were reacting with something he was taking. Natural herbs have to be taken with caution too – they do have reactions with certain drugs.

Many of the brands have certification on their web site – either from CITES or from a reputed chemical analysis laboratory. Now this need not be absolutely authentic. Most could be of course but certification can be faked and laboratory analysis could be genuine because a genuine hoodia sample was sent while the tablets that are marketed could have fake hoodia. There is many a hoodia scam that is taking place so it is better to check online at maybe a hoodia forum or two so that one can get some idea of the brands that seem to be working with other people. It is rather unfortunate that one cannot take these claims at face value but it would be far better to do a weeding out initially than suffer the consequences of ill heath and complications later.
