Before getting into the Hoodia vs. Glucose debate, you have to understand how each of them work as appetite suppressant. Let’s start with Glucose. There is a region in the mid brain called the hypothalamus, which monitors (among other functions) hunger, thirst and blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels rise to a certain point, the hypothalamus sends out a signal and you start feeling a sensation of fullness – you have eaten enough.

The Cambridge University carried out a study that showed that by monitoring one’s blood sugar levels, one’s appetite could be controlled. Higher blood sugar levels did have a temporary effect on one’s appetite. The key word here is “temporary”, because the food you eat and the activities you do will affect the level of glucose in your blood.

The only way to control your weight through the level of glucose in your blood is to first: monitor your diet closely to find out how your body reacts to various foods. Second: monitor your activities and work out how much exercise you do in a day. Third: Closely monitor your levels of blood glucose to work out a diet that keeps your blood sugar levels high enough, so that you can control your feelings of hunger. This means you have to be very vigilant with yourself daily – possibly easy to do for a very short while, but almost impossible over a long stretch of time. People gain weight because for various reasons; metabolic, hereditary or just plain bad eating habits, these messages between the blood and the brain get distorted. Your brain can be tricked into “believing” that you are still hungry even though your stomach is full.

Now let’s take hoodia gordonii. Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant that grows in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. The San tribes have taken it for centuries to curb their hunger when food stocks were low. The South African government researched hoodia gordonii and isolated its active principal P57, which proved to be a hunger suppressant.

P57 was found to behave in much the same way as glucose, in that it caused the hypothalamus to respond as though the levels of blood glucose had risen, but without any calories being ingested. Furthermore, P57 was 10,000 times more active than sugar!

It is neither a stimulant, nor is it addictive – it has no side effects at all.

So, on the one hand we have the option of using diet (which means calories, whichever way you look at it) to regulate one’s appetite and on the other hand we have hoodia gordonii (no calories and a little bit goes 10,000 times further) to control hunger pangs, accompanied by a diet perfectly suited to one’s needs and lifestyle. Glucose levels in the blood constantly change with eating and with activity. Hoodia gordonii is consistent – once you have taken the required amount, it will remain active for the given period.

As is obvious, there is no contest – hoodia gordonii is a clear winner.
