Phytopharm And Its Hoodia

Soon, hoodia will roll out from Phytopharm, the British pharmaceutical company. It’s been a long time coming because the first press reporting was in 1997 when the company first began testing the product. The public wasn’t even sure whether or not it would make its appearance into the world as a prescription drug. Phytopharm called it a natural occurring appetite suppressant in all their talks with other companies.

Phytopharm entered into collaboration with Pfizer to develop a product out of hoodia. However, this fell through with Pfizer closing down the division that was dealing with plant extracts and they have now entered into a partnership with Unilever. This might seem a bit strange because Unilever is a foods company, not a pharmaceutical company. So it is quite likely that their hoodia will not be a prescription drug but could take some other form which might be more in line with the foods line.

Phytopharm use a hoodia extract that is patented. Though they have tried to prove that others calling it an appetite suppressant is also infringement of their right – or so they believe, their site seems to have removed the patent infringement act which used to be displayed earlier. They are aware of course that there are a number of companies selling hoodia gordonii. However, they fully believe that when their hoodia is launched, it will stand head and shoulders above all the others. They have been researching this for a number of years and one can expect to see the launch of the product sometime soon. The product is going through clinical research right now and there are a number of people looking forward to its launch.

What it might do in the marketplace is put to rest the whole scam about fake hoodia gordonii. Some put the figure of fake and adulterated hoodia to an alarming figure of 80%. If that is indeed true, then Phytopharm has a readymade market waiting for it. The initial work of the hoodia concept of suppressing appetite has already been done by the others. The hype about hoodia is here to stay. What Phytopharm will probably do is to walk in and take the lion’s share of the market by sheer virtue of the fact that its product is tested and comes from a reliable company so the substance is, indeed the real and natural hoodia.  So all in all, Phytopharm looks like it has it good, with a great market success awaiting its launch of its hoodia.

Hoodia: Does It Work?

You might want to ask yourself whether hoodia really does work before you get into a weight loss program featuring this product. What seems promising is the fact that there are a number of people who seem to feel that hoodia has indeed curbed their cravings and suppressed their hunger pangs. Now this is a huge claim because if that happens, you’re halfway home in your quest for weight loss.

Ask the hoodia fanatics and they will tell you that it really is great to think that your mind just blanks out when it comes to food. Never mind if your there was a time when your body craved for something, say, sweet. With hoodia, not only do the hunger pangs not come on, your mind just doesn’t remember to be hungry. Or so they say, especially the ones who are shouting the loudest about this magical miracle succulent.

However, this has been happening for a long time. Every time a new diet fad enters the market, everyone screams themselves hoarse about how good it is and how much weight they have lost. Then along comes the next one, packaged even better and lo and behold, the whole herd of weight watchers gravitate towards it. The difference with hoodia is that they don’t have to set a diet regimen for you. What it does really is to turn off the switch inside you that tells you that you are hungry. So if you don’t feel hungry, you don’t eat and you lose weight.

Sure, there is a controversy about this product as there always has been about everything else. There are whispers of tests having been done on certain samples of products available in the market today and while some are genuine hoodia gordonii, there are others where there are little if no hoodia present. Unfortunately there have not been too many studies done on hoodia and not enough checks in place. Testing a sample on your own can be very expensive so might not be an option. So the best way to get this product that can stop your cravings is by looking up and finding out what brand is the best and the most reliable.

The actual natural and pure hoodia is supposed to work very well – after all, the San bushmen in Africa have been using it for generations to curb their hunger and thirst in the desert. So if you get the real thing, then it will work for you! What you need to perhaps do is to ask yourself whether this is really what you want from a weight loss product and if so, whether you want to rely solely on what it does or whether you would like a whole program of which this is one part.

Hoodia And Dieting

There’s so much being written about when it comes to hoodia gordonii that it has been elevated to a dimension above mere supplements or drugs to a position of a magical cure. What hoodia does is to suppress the hunger pangs you feel and if you don’t feel hungry, you don’t eat and then you lose weight. What hoodia should perhaps be is not an all-in-all weight reducer. It should be a part of the dieting mix and then maybe while you don’t go overboard with it, there will be a balanced approach to the product.

When it is added to a regimen that you follow in order to lose weight, hoodia could be a good addition because it triggers off or completes your weight loss program. In most weight loss programs, you exercise, you eat right and you follow a schedule. If hoodia were to be added, there would be one great advantage – you won’t have the urge to snack frequently and therefore the weight loss would be much more. What you will have to take care of is to forcibly make yourself drink water so that you do not get dehydrated – this is very essential if you are exercising.

While there have been a few studies conducted, there is not enough known about hoodia to make it the sole factor in a weight loss program. If you make it as just one of the factors, you will also be making it less possible to suffer from side effects if any. Many herbs and plants do have side effects – it isn’t as though everything in Nature is without side effects. This becomes even more prominent when there is an extraction of the active ingredient. One has no idea how it could affect the various organs of the body over time and regular use.

Dieting has to be a concerted effort and there will have to be a judicious mix of eating less and exercising. This just makes it a lot more effective with weight loss. When you add hoodia and you suppress your hunger, it just quickens the weight loss and you reach your targets faster. It would be a mistake perhaps to add hoodia to any exercise regimen that is prescribed for people who have a health problem or are recovering from one. One does not know yet the exact way that hoodia could react in these circumstances or indeed whether it will react with any of the medicines that the person is taking. One really has to be a bit careful before deciding on whether to take hoodia or not – it would all depend on how desperate you are to lose weight.

Hoodia Reviews

Look around in magazines or in the virtual world and you can see the number of reviews that can be found about hoodia gordonii. Ever since this succulent’s ability to control thirst and hunger pangs became known to the world, there has been a rush to produce more and more of these hoodia diet pills and advertise them to the public. Along with the many brands – you only have to search for hoodia online and you’ll see what we mean – there are hoodia reviews about the pills and the amazing things they can do for you.

However, you need to look at the fine print. What you see might just be an eye-opener. Very often, hoodia is not sold in the pure form but mixed with other herbs. These herbs might be good in themselves but they might not have the ability to make you lose weight. Also, you might need more of the hoodia than what is present in the hoodia capsules in order to lose the optimum weight every day.

Some of the reviews conveniently forget to elaborate on the effects of the additions to the hoodia powder. In some cases, there were herbs that lowered blood sugar, in others there were some that lowered cholesterol or blood pressure. Now these could be dangerous when combined with something that is a hunger suppressant. Combo hoodia products should be looked at with nothing but suspicion. Don’t get taken in by the reviews but look at the ingredients stated on the pack and take the trouble to look up and read about them online before you take any hoodia diet pill.

Other hoodia reviews might just concentrate on other hoodia brands’ inferiority. Do not take this to mean that the hoodia brand in question is superior. There are no quantifiable tests that have been done on most of them to state with authority that they are the best and that they contain top-notch quality of hoodia powder.

Reviews of an ingredient that has not been fully tested for side effects are not to be taken too seriously as the parameters for a good quality product have not yet been set. True, there are no recorded side effects right now that have come out but that does not mean that hoodia gordonii is absolutely safe. Some side effects take a long time to make themselves apparent and by the time that happens, it might be too late for many who took hoodia on a regular basis. Right now the hype about the products, especially in all the hoodia reviews makes it seem almost like a wonder drug so little wonder people get carried away, especially when the promise is one of looking good by losing weight.

Hoodia – Known Side Effects

Are there any known side effects you need to worry about with hoodia gordonii? To date, no, but this does not mean that there will not be any side effects – just that maybe they haven’t shown up as yet. Unfortunately, there has not been enough of testing that has been done in order to warn people about any possible effects. What seems to be the rule in the marketplace is that every hoodia brand screams about how inferior the other is and how superior they are. In the absence of testing, these claims can in no way be proved or substantiated.

Some have laboratory tests to support their claims that they are the real thing while others do not – so who does one believe? It really is a dog-eat-dog world right now when it comes to hoodia and the many brands. The whole problem is that people will do anything to look good – it has become almost mandatory on the world we live in. And rather than be fat and left out, they would rather try anything that gives them the promise of losing weight without too much effort. After all, the only effort here is popping a hoodia pill – how hard is that?

So let us look at what the real hoodia does offer – it suppresses the hunger pangs that all of us normally feel. Together with that – and this is not stressed upon – it also suppresses thirst. Now while this was a boon for the bushmen in the desert so they didn’t die of hunger and thirst, this suppression of thirst could be dangerous and could lead to dehydration.

There have been some cases where the pills have produced stomach upsets but this cannot really be proved to be a side effect as the hoodia pill in question could have been adulterated with just about anything. With no government or FDA regulations in place where this product is concerned, it’s going to be a long time before we can separate the chaff from the wheat and determine whether hoodia has any negative side effects or not. There have been studies that seemed to indicate damage to the liver over prolonged use but these have never been put to the test and researched. So that leaves us with a product that everyone pins their hopes on to lose weight, little knowing if they are opening a Pandora’s box when they start taking something that has not yet been cleared for any side effects.

Getting Pure Hoodia

How do you know if what you bought is natural hoodia or not? There have been scams where stuff that was not hoodia was passed off as the real thing to a whole lot of unsuspecting people. In fact, there are reports that over three quarters of the hoodia available are either fake or are not pure hoodia. The problem is, there is no way of being able to tell unless it undergoes laboratory testing.

There are so many sites on the Internet that promote their own brand of hoodia and they usually go with the premise that theirs is good while most of the others are not. However, they cannot tell you how to tell that theirs is superior or the real thing. No hoodia brand has undergone extensive testing to certify that it is in fact the actual ingredient, in the right proportions and that each dose is what it should be. When there have been no safety tests done for an ingredient, how can safety measures be set up? So don’t believe all those absolutely pure hoodia ads – it would be better to go talk to people on forums to see which brand they used that worked for them.

The sad part is, there is no central testing body where a brand can be certified as containing pure hoodia and no adulterants or even worse, no hoodia at all. When people go berserk over a new diet fad, reason usually does not apply. They will still want to try it for themselves. If hoodia really does work, it would be sad if people had the fake stuff and gave up on it saying it does not work. The manufacturers meanwhile will no doubt be laughing all the way to the bank!

Hoodia gordonii from Africa must be imported only with a permit in order that there is no rash cutting down of all the hoodia plants there is the land. However, there are instances of faked certificates which make it a problem. Hoodia plants mature only after five years so care should be taken that there is no wanton destruction of the plants as demand for the product swells from all over the world.

Yet another way that hoodia manufacturers cheat people is by submitting a genuine sample to a testing lab and then packing the capsules with fake or adulterated powder.  Sad to say, when hoodia does not work on some while the results are seen on others, people might feel that they should take it for a longer spell or they might feel that the product does not work on them.

Side Effects Of Hoodia

The whole marketing and sales strategy of hoodia manufacturers is the claim that while hoodia suppresses hunger pangs, it has no side effects whatsoever. Is this a true claim? Hoodia might have been had by the African bushmen in the desert for generations but the safety of the extracted ingredient is yet to be ratified. However, to date, no negative effects have been reported and one hopes that the claims though untested, are indeed true. There are however, no studies that have been published thus far which is what makes this claim a bit worrisome.

One question that does come to mind is whether something that has been used by a certain race even though it is for thousands of years in a particular climate will be safe for another race to use in totally different geographical and climatic conditions. There was also the news that a Pfizer researcher had indicated that the herb could cause liver damage and warned that it should be tested before approvals were given. He even warned people about using it with so little having been done by ways of tests and after effects.

There is also no way to know if hoodia will react with anything else the person is taking like supplements or medication. The bushmen were obviously fit and did not have the usual big city diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. They also used it for a very necessary need – to suppress thirst and hunger in the desert where otherwise they could perish with hunger and thirst. To then use this in order to suppress hunger and thirst in order to lose weight might not seem a smart thing to do – considering that in a person who has other problems, there could be complications. The side effects might not show up at once but might do so much later – when it could be too late.

Another disquieting thing is the fact that it also suppresses thirst. We need water in order to keep our bodies working right and for cleansing all the debris from the body. If our sense of thirst is suppressed, we might just forgot to drink water and the consequences could be serious dehydration.

Hoodia should in any case not be used by anyone who is pregnant or just had a baby. It should also be kept far away from children. We do not know enough about it and it would be a shame if many people had side effects before enough testing was done.

About Hoodia

How did hoodia gordonii become so popular? After all, the African bushmen had been using it for years and no one had ever noticed earlier. It was a Dutchman anthropologist who first realized how wonderful this plant was way back in the 1930s. He was studying the San Bushmen when he saw that they used this to suppress their hunger. In the sixties, the national scientific laboratory in South Africa began studying the hoodia plant and they soon saw that the animals they were testing started losing weight.

The scientists began more studies with a British pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm and together, they discovered the active ingredient in this plant and isolated it. They called this P57 and they applied for and got a patent for it. Then Pfizer joined hands with them to manufacture this herb for commercial purposes but the rights were sold back to Phytopharm after a while and today for hoodia Unilever is the company that works alongside Phytopharm.

Phytopharm set up a trial with eighteen people and it was this trial where it was found that doing nothing else to lose weight, hoodia meant that the persons who had taken it lost around a thousand calories a day. Some in the group were given placebos and the hoodia group was compared to the behavior of the placebo group. However, this was just a study they did and it was never published or subjected to scrutiny by any recognized body. All we have going is the number of calories that a person ate less a day because his hunger was suppressed.

When the whole hoodia plant news first hit the stands, a correspondent from 60 Minutes went to Africa to cover it. The team went out with a local bushman to find and test hoodia. She found that the plant tasted like cucumber but what amazed her was that she never felt hungry or thirsty for a long time. There were no side effects that she experienced. Once she came back and talked about it, the whole hype grew to huge proportions.

There was a study later where the active ingredient from hoodia P57 was injected into rats’ brains to see if there was any change in their eating patterns. It was found that the rats that were given this ate much less than the ones that weren’t. Since this was injected into the brain and the hoodia available is to be ingested orally, they felt that no comparisons could be made and no conclusions could be drawn.

Today hoodia capsules as well as hoodia powder and hoodia liquid are available all over. You can buy hoodia online too and you might get it in a tea form as well. There are diet pills too which use hoodia as one of the ingredients in their mix.

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

Hoodia – the name has suddenly caught the fancy of people who want to lose weight and all many of them can think of is how to pop those hoodia diet pills and how quickly they can lose weight. However, it might be a good thing to go back and take a look at what hoodia gordonii is all about.

Hoodia gordonii is a plant which grows in Africa and which looks like a cactus. It grows in the deserts of Africa and there is a reason why it has burst into public consciousness. Actually, more than one. The main reason is that in Africa, for generations, men have relied on this plant in order to curb their feelings of hunger as well as of thirst. This is really great in the dessert where very often they have to walk miles through hot sand under a hot sun. All these bushmen did was to break off a bit of plant and eat it. Hoodia is very bitter and it is an upright plant that grows in clumps. It is actually a succulent though it looks like a cactus. The plant flowers only when it is five years old and this is the time when it is harvested. The flowers are a pale purple in color. There are many different kings of hoodia plants and it is the hoodia gordonii that has been identified and used for commercial purposes. This seems to be because this is the only variety that is supposed to contain the substance P57 which is what contributes to suppressing the hunger pangs in a person.

The other reason that hoodia diet pills have shot into prominence could have nothing to do with how effective it is. Hoodia has been known about for years. It was only when ephedra was banned that people started looking around for something else to take its place. This wonder herb happened to be around at the right time. Weight loss is such a big agenda in most people’s lives that anything to do with is usually successful. When a new substance is presented where it does all the work of losing weight for you, it makes it even more exciting. What hoodia actually promises is to control your hunger pangs – not make you lose weight. However, for us, that has become synonymous. Eating is very often the problem and if there is some way to control or suppress those hunger pangs, people feel there’s no way they can gain weight. While this is true to a certain degree, there need to be other weight loss measures that are resorted to as well. Hoodia is great in that it is half the battle won when you don’t feel hungry and want to stuff your face ever so often. The next step is to shed those extra pounds that have piled up through exercise.
